- Obtain history: diet, appetite, droppings, behavior, housing, exposure to other birds
- Record weight and body condition
- Observe breathing, posture, activity, feather quality, and symmetry
- Examine eyes, nostrils, ears, mouth, tongue, choana, and beak
- Palpate the crop, keel, chest muscles, abdomen, wings, legs, and feet
- Auscultate the heart and lungs
- Check the vent and droppings
- Evaluate feather condition and look for parasites, skin lesions, or feather-plucking
- Trim nails, shape the beak, or clip wings when requested and medically appropriate
- Discuss diet, housing, enrichment, grooming, and warning signs of illness
- Light sedation or anesthesia when needed for safe handling or thorough examination
- Optional: fecal testing, bloodwork, or infectious-disease screening
